What is Dual Vocational Training?

Dual training, also known as in-company training, is the classic training system in Germany. The training is divided into two parts and takes place at a vocational school and a company. The duration of study, depending on the specialization, is two to three or three and a half years. This system is practiced in several countries, notably Germany, Austria, Switzerland and in the German-speaking Community of Belgium, but also for some years now in South Korea.

At the vocational school, you will learn the theoretical basics you need to know in order to practice the profession. At the training company, you will put what you have learnt into practice and apply on spot.

Advantages of the Dual Vocational Training

Your first salary

Money should not be the main reason for choosing an apprenticeship. However, there are definitely advantages to earning it during your apprenticeship. With a dual apprenticeship, you will earn a monthly salary of 900-1400 euros from day one, depending on your field, year of study and location.

Gain work experience

From day one in your apprenticeship, you will not only earn money, but also gain work experience. This puts you well ahead of those who carry out a purely school-based apprenticeship. The work experience you gain will not only pay off later in your day-to-day work, but will also help in case you want to change companies or pursue further training.

The practical relevance motivates you to learn

Unlike a simple school-based apprenticeship, dual training offers you the opportunity to put what you have learnt in the classroom directly into action. This motivates you to learn and also makes the work more fun, as well as obtaining immediate results.

Diverse learning locations increase motivation

Switching between the school and the training center ensures that you never get bored. On the contrary, constantly switching between different learning locations allows you to face new challenges, which can greatly increase your motivation.

High chances of being taken on by the company

Especially in our quick-pace world, many people strive for job security. A dual training program can provide you with such security. After all, there is a good chance that you will be recruited by the company that taught you everything you need to know after your final examination.

Social recognition

People always view dual training in a positive light, which not only reflects well upon you, but also on your training center. In addition, dual training in Germany is highly regarded and is internationally recognized.

Switching between work and school

Learning through theories only for three years can be boring. In the dual training program, you regularly switch back and forth between the school and the company. Either by spending one or two days a week at a vocational school, or by having these lessons all together, i.e. with full-time lessons over several weeks, this alternation allows you to learn everything you need for your future profession, both in theory and in practice. The good thing about this, is that you can put everything your teachers teach you at school into immediate practice at work.

Interesting further training opportunities

If you haven’t had enough of learning after your apprenticeship, there are exciting opportunities for further training. For example, after completing your dual training program, you can become a business administrator or a master craftsman or you can study at a university for applied sciences.
